Lionsgate announced Tuesday that they would begin planning a John Wick cinematic universe starting with a spin-off film titled Ballerina. The script comes from Shay Hatten, 23 years old, as his first sale.
The Hollywood Reporter states:
"Ballerina has been described as being in the vein of La Femme Nikita, the 1990 female-centric assassin movie that helped launch the career of filmmaker Luc Besson, but with a more pulpy, hyper-stylized bent a la Quentin Tarantino or Matthew Vaughn."
Starring Keanu Reeves, John Wick came out in 2014 to $88 million worldwide based on a $20 million budget and an 85% Rotten Tomatoes score. A sequel was ordered after the success. John Wick: Chapter 2 gave Lionsgate a box office haul of $169 million worldwide, beating the sequel's estimated $40 million production budget. Chapter 2 was lauded with an 89% Rotten Tomatoes score.
John Wick: Chapter 2 introduced audiences to a world of assassins, with a cliffhanger ending begging for a third installment. The franchise can easily add in more and more mythology and Ballerina may be a perfect place to start.
