Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues - Movie Review

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is a hilarious epic, with the same old witty cast, and many newcomers. Will Farrell and his San Diego-based news team bring the thunder of comedy, but many newcomers get a silent crowd and the story becomes muddled with side-story after side-story.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues follows the rise and fall then rise again of anchorman legend Ron Burgundy (Will Farrell) as he teams up with his old news team (Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, David Koechner) to conquer New York City.

It's all about the jokes, and this film is filled to the brink with comedy. From slapstick to dry humor the laughs persist for most of the film. The best comedic moments come from Ferrell and his original San Diego news team, while other moments fall flat due to the consistent stream of new actors or cameos from famous faces. The jokes lose steam in the middle of the film due to the slow feel to the story and bad pacing. There were also unnecessary elements to the story, like Ron Burgundy's new love interest, or the tale about Burgundy raising a baby shark. Other things felt shoehorned in, like Farrell's love for his son and the GNN manager's villainous role near the end. Going into the film there seemed to be somewhat of a rivalry between the mega shot anchor Jack Lime, played by James Marsden, and Burgundy, but it never became anything but a series of one liners and cheap jokes.

As much as we are in it for the jokes, it wouldn't have been made possible without Ferrell. Ferrell is over the top like a soap opera star. Everything he does, from dialogue to emotion is so dramatic you have to laugh. More fun acting came from Steve Carell and his character Brick. Another over the top character that can only be laughed at every time he's on screen. These two characters are what make this film hilarious beyond belief. Then, there are tons of cameos, from Tina Fey and Kanye West, to a certain very famous star who had a very large box office bomb this year. I don't want to spoil everything. These cameos were just not funny. Each of these actors were underused on their abilities, and even the supporting cast outside the news team were underused.

As per the first film, the second film had an action sequence between many other news teams. This was an amazing experience to watch, because the comedy was there and it was longer. We finally got the long, funny action sequence we were hoping for.

The jokes cover up the unnecessary side-stories and plodding middle, and many jokes weren't funny. But, this movie had a great first and third act and I couldn't stop laughing when the good jokes were out. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is worth a watch if you're a Will Ferrell fan or an Anchorman fan.

B
Good Qualities: When the great jokes come you can't stop laughing. Great beginning and end. Ferrell and Carell kill it with their comedic abilities. Jokes come from every range of the comedic spectrum.
Bad Qualities: The middle gets lost with many side-stories, besides the original news team the other supporting actors cannot pull off jokes.
